Richard holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Auckland in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. Following the completion of his doctorate, he worked as a Research Software Engineer in the Centre for eResearch, also at the University of Auckland. Here he split his time between writing research codes and engaging in the data analytics side of research collaborations. During this time at Auckland, he also enjoyed a range of teaching tasks: tutoring, lecturing and running software carpentry courses.
Prior to moving to Curtin, he worked at Featurespace, at fast growing, university spinout based in Cambridge, UK. Here he focused on deploying machine learning products into production at a number of large banks, airlines and retailers.
